Subject: Formal Introduction to Lecturer
Dear Mr. Blackstone,
As a new student attending your course, Technical Communication, I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself officially to you. My name is Nathaniel Pereira and I joined the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) studying telematics (public transport systems engineering) on September 4th 2017. I am a graduate from Ngee Ann Polytechnic with a diploma in information technology. I chose SIT because of my immense passion for public transportation since young, and the desire to give back to society by being part of a company revolutionizing the way people commute to work. Outside of university, I am a head judge for my local Pokemon Video Game Championships community, where I facilitate administration and gameplay rulings that happen in my tournaments that take place every fortnight.
Overall, I have received feedback from my friends and family that I generally am a good speaker, and I articulate my intentions effectively. However they also pointed out that I lack the ability to sweet talk and be tactful in my conversations, especially under stress, as under stress I become more direct about what I say to get my point across.
Overall, I am looking forward to the communication journey I will be partaking in your class. My goal after these 10 weeks with you and my classmates is to maintain composure in front of large crowds of people, as I will be doing presentations not only in my future workplace, but also as part of my hobby: Being a head judge and emcee at the Pokemon Video Game Championshipst.
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter.

Kind regards,

Pereira Nathaniel Joseph

  1. Hey Nat,
It is very heartening to know that you would like to contribute back to the society with that passion of yours.
As a person who faced similar shortfalls in my younger days, a very valuable advice a teacher gave me was to take 2 seconds to contemplate the impact of my words before saying them. I believe you'll be able to converse better one day with conscious effort. All the best :)
    Regards,
    JingYi

  2. Hey Nat!

I like how you're such a candid person, even in the expression of your blog. I see that you come from a very technical background in Ngee ann polytechnic. Perhaps that explains your strengths when it comes to the very technical modules we take together. I hope to learn more from you in this area, as I wouldn't consider myself technical at all.

I have utmost confidence in your presentation ability, as your character comes across as one who does not mince his words, and articulates clearly only what is useful and important. This is a valuable commodity in today's marketplace.

I believe Brad will be able to guide you on the art of subtle communication over the next couple of weeks, and that by the end of these three years you will surely have mastered the art :)

Looking forward to a fruitful friendship with you Nat!

  3. Dear Nat,

Thank you for this clear and concise formal letter. I like the way you paint a picture of your background in terms of an evolving interest in the transportation sector. In particular, you do a fine job explaining your motivation in your joining telematics at SIT.

You are very specific in terms of the explanation you give for both your communication strength and weakness, which you tie to your goals for the module.

In terms of language use, this is also a fluent post.

In fact, the only area that I think you could improve and expand on was the one that gives you passion every day, your hobby, as you call it, acting as a judge for the Pokemon Video Game Championships. Why not let us know more about that?

    I appreciate the effort.

    Brad

    1. Hi Brad,
Thank you for the comments! I was actually quite nervous before submitting my introductory letter, but I feel proud that I published a letter that you enjoyed reading.

As for my hobby as a judge (or rather a head judge as I was just recently promoted to), I facilitate the proceedings of my Pokemon tournaments to ensure that administration and rounds are carried out smoothly, and competitors are given fair outcomes to the best of my ability. I also stand in as an emcee to boradcast any updates on rulings, prize presentation, and future tournament dates and locations.

Do let me know if you would like to know more about my hobby!

      Kind regards,
      Nat

      Thanks!
